Abstract
The lining of a glass melting furnace is formed of bricks comprising silica and between 10 and 23 per cent of alumina, and the furnace is heated to its operating temperature before being charged. The bricks comprise one third each by weight of fired and unfired grossalmeroder pot clay, containing about 21 per cent of alunina in the fired state and one third quartz powder, which is mixed with 15 per cent of water before shaping and drying. The furnace lining is surrounded by a thick layer of insulating brick and the temperature at the boundary between the lining and the insulating bricks is brought to above 900 DEG C. before the furnace is charged. The inner surface of the lining becomes impermeable. The specification gives grain sizes for the fired pot clay.
