Abstract

905,566. Ceramic glass bodies. CORNING GLASS WORKS. Feb. 24, 1961 [March 7, 1960 (2)], No. 6872/61. Class 56. In the heat treatment of a glass body to a semi-crystalline body, the resistance to attack by alkaline solutions is increased by carrying out the treatment in a controlled atmosphere comprising at least 25% by volume of water vapour or, alternatively, in a reducing atmosphere equivalent to 1-10% of excess combustibles therein until the temperature has reached 900-1000‹ C. and thereafter substituting therefor an oxidizing atmosphere and maintaining the oxidizing atmosphere during the final heating and the cooling to below about 1000‹ C. The process is particularly used in the heat-treatment of ceramic glass as in Specification 857,367 and of the composition in percentages by weight: SiO 2 70; Li 2 O 2.5; Al 2 O 3 , 18; TiO 2 4.5; MgO 3; ZnO 1, with up to 1 impurities, the glass being heated to about 800‹ C., held for 1 hour, heating to 1080-1175‹ C., held at 1080-1120‹ C. for 4 hours, at 1120-1175‹ C. for 2 hours and cooled. To produce the water vapour atmosphere, dry steam is passed under pressure into the heating kiln which is maintained throughout the heating and cooling. The reducing atmosphere is produced by passing a non-explosive mixture of nitrogen and hydrogen into the kiln, or, in gas-fired kilns, variation of the air supply gives first the reducing and then oxidizing atmosphere. Specifications 829,147 and 857,367 are referred to.
