Abstract

Carbonaceous shales, fuel-enriched clays and like materials are dried, heated until they ignite, e.g. at 450 DEG C., completely oxidised at an approximately constant temperature between 750 DEG and 950 DEG C. and partially sintered at not less than 950 DEG C. with supply of external heat. The treated material may be granular but, as described, a moulded or extruded paste of carbonaceous shales, with or without ordinary or refractory pulp or clays, is cut if appropriate, dried, and heated as rapidly as possible in a kiln the combustion products of the ignition stage of which may supply the necessary heat. After ignition, the temperature of the treated material continues to rise rapidly to 850 DEG C. where further rise is prevented by cold air admission, hot gaseous products draw-off, or both, the treated material maintaining its porosity and burning increasingly slowly until oxidation is complete when the temperature may have fallen slightly to 800 DEG C., and following which the temperature is raised to 1040 DEG C., 1080 DEG C. or more to effect the partial sintering.
