A reducing atmosphere is obtained in an electrically heated tunnel kiln for firing ceramic ware by introducing a reducing gas, e.g. into the firing zone at 3. The gas is carried through the kiln in counter-current to the trucks 1 by the movement of the kiln atmosphere induced by a fan 2, and the extent of the reduction zone is controlled by the introduction of a transverse current of preheated air by a fan 5 to burn said reducing gas. This air is preheated, either externally of the kiln, or in the wall passages 7 of a rapid cooling zone, passing to the fan 5 through a duet 8.
