Abstract
In a process of heat-treating material, the supply of heat to the furnace is determined at least in part by the variation in furnace temperature resulting from the introduction of the charge, while the furnace is heated at the maximum possible rate until its temperature reaches a predetermined maximum above the desired final temperature, the surface of the charge also being above the desired temperature. The rate of heat supply is then reduced progressively so that the temperatures of the furnace and of the charge surface fall, and the temperature of the core of the charge continues to rise, until all three temperatures reach the desired temperature substantially simultaneously.
