Abstract
A method of producing a ceramic material having a dense body, comprising a mixture of a crystalline phase and of a vitreous phase, wherein 45 to 85% by weight of Al2O3, ZrO2, ThO2 and/or Cr2O3 or mixed crystals thereof with a grain size of less than 20m which form the crystalline phase, are mixed with 13 to 28% Al2O3, 51 to 71% SiO2, 1.5 to 9.5% CaO, 1 to 5% MgO, 1.5 to 5% Na2O and 4.5 to 9% K2O, which forms the vitreous phase, the substances that form the mixture being so chosen that the coefficient of thermal expansion of the crystalline phase is substantially the same as that of the vitreous phase, wherein the mixture is then cast or formed in known manner, and dried and, possibly after preliminary firing, is fired at a temperature between 1300 DEG and 1500 DEG C. The vitreous phase components are used in the form of the silicates, hydroxides and/or salts which form oxides under the firing conditions. The fired material may be subjected to a heat treatment at a temperature above the transformation point of the vitreous phase. Further, a conventional glaze may be applied to the material comprising on the Seyer formula 0.1 to 0.2 K2O, 0.45 to 0.50 CaO, 0.35 to 0.40 MgO, 1.0 to 1.4 Al2O3, 6.0 to 8.0 SiO2. The glaze is fired on at Seyer Cones 13 to 15.
