Abstract

A compact low expansion (+ 280 to - 30 X 10-8 over 20 to 500 DEG C.) thermal shock resistant ceramic body, for oven ware or electrical insulation, is made by mixing powdered amblygonite (e.g. 35-55% LiF.AlPO4) and clay (e.g. 30-65% ball and china clay) with or without alumina or alumina producing material (e.g. 0-30% Al2O3.XH2O), i.e. the latter being either calcined or as hydrate. The mixture may be formed into workpieces and fired at 975-1225 DEG C. The material formed has a crystal structure similar b -encryptite (Li2O.Al2O3. 2SiO2) in which some of the SiO2 is replaced by AlPO4. Porous bodies may also be produced.
