Abstract

A refractory body comprises zirconium boride in a matrix of an axygen containing compound of zirconium and calcium. It may be made from zirconium boride and calcium zirconate fired at 2000 DEG C. in an inert atmosphere or by firing in a similar manner a shaped mixture of calcium boride or borate, zirconium and carbon. The carbon reduces part of the zirconia, but when calcium borate is used more carbon is required to reduce the borate also. A temporary binder, e.g. dextrin, aids in moulding. Preferred proportions are 75 per cent. zirconium boride 20 per cent. calcium zirconate. The compositions may be used in grinding wheels, and pore formers may be added.
