Abstract
A lightweight aggregate is produced from argillaceous or non-argillaceous slate by heating in a rotary inclined kiln with an enlarged entry part, and an enlarged mixing part connected by a part of approximately half the total kiln <PICT:0820971/III/1> length, the material being raised to a sufficiently high temperature to produce glassification immediately before its discharge at the firing end. The material is retained as a deep bed in the mixing chamber and subjected to the action of lifters 44, 45, 46 to raise it to near the glassification temperature. The lifters 44, 46 on the tapered inlet and outlet parts of the mixing chamber retard flow into and increase flow out of the mixing chambers respectively.
