Abstract
Spent oxide and a controlled amount of air are fed into one end of an elongated chamber and burnt in a combustion zone, the solid residue being discharged from the other end of the chamber and the vapours and gases produced are returned through the combustion zone from the discharge <PICT:0677614/III/1> end to the charging end so that their combustion is completed. Spent oxide is fed through a rotary kiln 1 to a stationary chamber 6, reactivated oxide being discharged at 12, and the vapours and gases are drawn back through a conduit 3, concentric with the kiln 1. Combustion of the vapours and gases is completed in the conduit 3, and the temperature of the kiln 1 is controlled by varying the rate of withdrawal of the gases and hence the intake of air. The burning spent oxide is agitated by radial lifters 14 extending longitudinally of the kiln 1. The spent oxide may be preheated in segmental chambers formed by radial partitions extending from the central tube to the kiln wall.
