Abstract

541,314. Carbonizing processes rotary retorts. PITTSBURG COAL CARBONIZATION CO. Aug. 31, 1940, No. 13688. Convention date, Jan. 26. [Class 55 (i)] In the manufacture of coal balls by low temperature carbonization in a rotary retort, the movement of the coal along the retort is restrained by baffles, and zones in the retort are defined by dams. The charge is fed into the retort 2 by a feed screw 22 and passes first into a preheating zone which extends as far as a dam 27 and has baffles 30 which tend to retard the movement of the charge through the retort. The plastic zone extends from the dam 27 to the dam 28, and the ball forming zone from the dam 28 to the dam 29 and on to the outlet 34. Discharge lifters 31 scoop up the balls and discharge them through the outlet 34. The retort is externally heated by the passage of combustion products from a furnace 11 through a passage 9 between an external stationary shell 8 and the rotary retort 2, the plastic zone being maintained at between 700‹ and 800‹ F., and the heating gases varying from 1050‹ F. at the lower end to about 900‹ F. at the upper end. The sizes of the coal balls range from one to eight inches in diameter. Distillates are exhausted through conduits 18 and 26. Specification 427,849 is referred to.
