Abstract
528,337. Coking processes. GAS ENGINEERS, INSTITUTION OF, and DENT, F. J. May 4, 1939, No. 13349. [Class 55 (i)] Carbonization is initiated in a portion of the charge in a pressure vessel by a local supply of heat which is subsequently reduced or discontinued, the heat evolved by carbonization in one portion of the charge being transferred by circulating gases to another portion so that a zone of high temperature (600‹ to 1000 ‹C. dependent on the pressure) travels through'the mass. The pressure maintained is at least 25 atmospheres. The gas is circulated by a pump 2 through the vessel 1 which may be of the kind described in Specification 519,246, and back through a condenser 3, liquor being withdrawn through a pipe 4 and surplus gas through an offtake 5. The coal may be preheated to 200‹ to 300‹ C. before use, and the local rise in temperature may be produced by temporarily preheating the circulating gas. When fusible coal is used it is charged in an annular mass round a central core of coke which is heated electrically to initiate carbonization.
