Abstract
472,596. Coking process and apparatus. CHOWN, J. A. March 20, 1936, No. 8361. [Classes 55 (i) and 55 (ii)] Solid carbonaceous materials such as coal slack are distilled at low temperature (500‹ C.) in cartridges 1 which are rolled through an externally heated retort 2, the distillates from the retort being passed into a dephlegmator 3 and condenser 4, and by pipes 18 through the carbonized charge in the cartridges which are moved into a cracking retort 17. The distillates are cracked and the by-products led to a dephlegmator 19 and condenser 20. Each cartridge 1 is provided with a removable hollow body 5 from which radiate hollow fins 6 having apertures 7, a sheath 8 enclosing the structure, so that passage of gases or distillates through the charge is facilitated. Gas-tight closures 15 allow the periodical charging and discharging of the cartridges. The carbonized charge is recovered in the form of briquettes.
