Abstract
330,902. Abbott, A. V. March 18, 1929. Retorts.-In a rotary retort having internal and external heating members 9 adjacent to the inner and outer walls 7, 6 which form an annular distillation chamber 8, retarding ribs or baffles 40 are provided on the inner wall and lifting ribs or baffles 39 on the outer wall. The charge is fed by an alternately advancing and retarding movement through the distillation chamber, the material being simultaneously subjected to different degrees of distillation temperature from the outer wall while advancing, and from the inner wall during the retarding movement respectively. The retort is heated by burners 4 and the heat is absorbed by steel flasks 9 filled with lead or other low-melting non-ferrous metal, and housed within channel members 10 riveted to the casings 6, 11 and 7, 12 respectively. A cooling cone 35 is arranged within the gas outlet, and a tar collector 37 is drained by a pipe 38.
