Abstract
539,193. Low temperature distillation retort and process. STEVENS, A. H. (Pittsburgh Coal Carbonization Co.). Feb. 27, 1940, No 3650. [Class 55 (i)] In the manufacture of coal balls in a rotary retort in which finely divided coal is fed through this retort and passes through pre-heating and plastic 'zones to a ball forming zone, air is admitted to the interior of the retort to provide for internal heating in addition to the external heating. The temperature in the retort varies from 805‹F. at the upper end to 1050‹F. at the discharge end. An inclined rotary retort 2 is enclosed by a stationary shell 8 and jacket 9 into which hot gases are supplied from a furnace 11, the gases entering the retort through conduits 13 and leaving for re-circulation through conduits 14, 15 and fan 16. The coal is fed through a casing 21 by a feed screw 22, and passes downwardly and over dams 27, 28, 29 which separate the pre-heating, plastic and ball forming zones, rifling 30 being provided to mix the charge and retard its downward movement. The residue is discharged by lifters 31 through an outlet 34 through which there is a free passage of air together with steam from pipe 38. The distillates are drawn off through outlet 18. The air reacts with the hydrocarbons and with the carbon formed in the retort to raise the temperature therein.
