Abstract

Rotary furnaces.-The low temperature distillation of coal is effected in rotary inclined retorts which may be heated externally or internally, or both, and the waste gases from blast furnaces, coke-ovens and producers can be utilized for heating. In one form of apparatus, the retort b<1> is mounted in an external rotary drum or casing a<1>, having an enlarged part e' in which coal is burnt, the combustion products passing through the charge in the retort to an outlet h; the air supply to the outer casing is controlled by dampers at g<1>. The charge in the retort may also be heated by the passage of gas from an external source.
