Retort furnaces; charging and discharging.- Vertical retorts for the distillation of coal are heated about the middle by burners 4a in a combustion-chamber 5, the hot gases then passing to a chamber 6b at the top of the retorts and afterwards through chambers 8 at the bottom to maintain the temperature on the introduction of steam into the retorts. The waste gases then pass through chambers 9 of a recuperator 14 for heating the supply of secondary air in chambers 11, and out to the stack at 10. Coal is introduced at the top of the retort, and the residual coke passes from the bottom on to an inclined plate 27 provided with adjustable teeth 28 against which it is forced and broken by cutter-blades 31 rotating on a shaft 30.
