ART Ul? PERA'ISIG RETOP/T CKE-0VENS implication fue@ September i5. 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, inens'r l?. Huguette, a citizen ci' the United States, residing ut Ensley, in the county of Jefferson and biste of Alabama, have invented certain new end useful Improvements itu the Art ot Operon ing Retort CokeOvens, oi which the following is e specification.
My invention relates particularly to the use of tur us u fue] for use in connection with such ovens.
Heretolore, es is Well-known, the reduction of coul to coke in retortovens has been etl'ected by heut derived from the combustion in the oven lues oif the Whole or u portion of the gases driven. oil from the coul in the process of distillation. These gases, however, are rich in hydro-carbone, and therefore available for illuminating purposes, und u connnercielly cheap ,substitute for these, by ineens of which tleeweoul should be eili-4 ciently eolied so that the grises driven ott' therefrom could be more profitably eniployed for othern thun heating purposes hes long been u, desideretuin 'in the uri', Such n, fuel, :is for as its heating qualities concerned, is found in ter, which is produeed in considerable quantities :is a, luy-product iu the operation oi" such ovens.. A heretofore insuperable difficulty in the use ofI tur for this purpose has been the fact that its' eeniroduces el short, intense deine of great local energy, the heat of which, however, is not so distributed throughout the heating flue, or dues, is to give the substantially even heut in ell ports of the oven re quired :for the production oit n colte of unii'orm quality. liioreoyer, by reason oli the intense locul lient there is danger of overheating, end thus destroying the fine .nieterial in the immediate vvicinity of the thune.
To the end of obvieting these dilliculties and enabling the use of ter as e 'i'uel for heating retort coke ovens, my.p1ocess,loroedA ly stated, consists in producing the bulk of by the combustion of the tar and at the saine time admitting to the heat-ing flues e current of gus whereby the heet produced by the eoii'ibustion el? the ter is evenly distributed throughout the heating flues. Any cheep forni of combustible gus, such as producer gus, or en inert sucli es Ythe products oi cour bustion from the chimney Hue, muy be used for the purpose. The producer gas being Very low in celoritic velue, or the 4roducts of combustion being Without colori ic value, uct as e distributer oit the highly heated products of combustion of the tar and curry them forward at u much more rapid rete, die` tributing them evenly throughout the fines and producing uniform und proper heating of the oven.
ll'vhether producer gas oran inert gus is employed in uny given cese will depend somewhat on the relative commercial values of producer gesl' und tur. Generally, however, l prefer to use producer gus, :is it not only distributes the highly healed products oi combustion of the 'ter and equelizes the heut throughout the tlues, but uit the suine time its combustion assists in heating the oven.
Any usuui or suite-ble eppmrutus muy he employed for ceri-ying my process into effect.
The drawing' iiled herewith, showing e, side elevation oit'l su oven, broken away ut the ends to showl the heating ilues, indicates e general arrangement that muy be em` Referring to the drawing, A, A, indicate the. heating flues und, a, f1, openings for the :admission o tir thereto.

Any suitable or Well known ioriu of tur burners und ineens for delivering the tur ut the burners, exzuuples of which Will readily occur to those skilled in the art, muy be eniployed.
My invention not only Imakes practicable for heating retort coke ovens u cheap und ulguudant fuel hitherto inapplicable for the purpose, but at the suine time enables the rich oven gfuscs to be dreun oil und upplied to purposes coinmeusurute to their reel value, the udvzuiluges of which will be readily un* derstood by those skilled in the art.

2. The hereintofore described improve-v nient in the art of operating retort coke ovens which consists in heating the oven by the combustion of ter in the heating iiues and distributing the heat so produced by Ineens of an independenty introduced gas.
3. The hereinbet'ore described improvement in the art of operating retort coke ovens which consists in heating the oven by 15 the combustion of tar and en independently introdueed ges whereby the heat produced by the combustion of the tar is distributed and equalized.
