Abstract
204,067. Bergh, S. V. Sept. 18, 1923. Retort furnaces; discharging. - Materials containing a large percentage of ash such as shale are distilled in retorts t h e residue from which is burned to supply heat for the distillation during which steam or inert gases are passed into the charge. A plurality of retorts are arranged above combustion chambers and between the retorts are heating means for the generation of steam or for superheating steam or gases, the gas outlets from the retort being at different levels. The material is heated in retorts 15 partly by external heat from flues 45 and partly by inert gases from pipes 41, the heat being derived from combustion chambers 5 divided by partitions 4 and provided with air inlets below the grate and steam inlets 6 above the grate, secondary air inlets admitting air to the space above the combustion zone. The residue from the retorts is burned in chambers 5 and the hot gases pass through flues 45 around the retorts and through flues 46 in which are disposed heating elements 23 for the generation of steam or superheating of gases and vapours. The waste heating gases escape by a discharge pipe 27 to collecting flues 28. An ash-discharging device, Fig. 12, comprises oscillating or fixed inclined flaps 32 arranged at opposite sides of two toothed rollers 9.
