Retort furnaces; charging and discharging.- A retort b is divided into two alternatelycharged chambers by means of a steam generator s, and is charged by a hopper a having a slide f which can open half way on either side, or with two half-slides; a similar arrangement g at the bottom separates the retort from a cooling chamber c. The retort is heated by burning gases in a flue i from which the gases on their way to the chimney pass through the charging hopper.
