Metallurgical furnaces; shaft furnaces.-Hightemperature chemical and metallurgical processes are carried out in a shaft-like furnace in which the material to be treated, being fed dewnwardly at the sides, forms at g a trough, which, with the arch b, constitutes a high temperature chamber. The incoming material sliding down the furnace walls protects them from the heat and is itself preheated. In the case of a reduction process, combustion of gases issuing from the reduction zone takes place in the chamber above the trough g, or liquid, gaseous or pulverulent fuel may be supplied from an outside source.
