Abstract

129,758. Testrup, N., and Techno-Chemical Laboratories, Ltd. June 12, 1918. Chemical manufactures, furnaces for; retort furnaces; roasting-furnaces; charging and discharging.- High-temperature reactions are conducted by feeding the material to be treated through a zone of high temperature on a layer of inert heatinsulating material, which protects the conveying-means from the action of the heat. In the furnace shown, which is substantially identical with that described in Specification 115,087, a layer of inert substance, for example silver sand, is fed on to the conveyer band e from a hopper l<1>, and on this layer the material to be treated is deposited from the hopper o. At the discharge end, both substances fall on to a screen g, and the sand is returned for re-use by the screw i and the elevator j, while the agglomerated reaction material passes to the sump h. The sealing of the reaction chamber at the sides is preferably effected by the inert material, and, to allow of this, the outer wall of the hopper o may be extended downwards to form a depression in the layer into which the reaction material is fed; or the side walls of the chamber may be extended to below the level of the front wall. When the reaction material is in lump form, it is led directly into the reaction chamber by a shoot passing through the front wall. The apparatus may be used for the destructive distillation of coal, in which case pipes m are provided for carrying off the gases, and, in connexion with other reactions, these pipes may be used for supplying gases. When there are no gaseous products of the reaction to be collected, the partition b<1> between the heating-chamber a and the reaction chamber b may be omitted.
