Abstract

Iron oxide ore is pre-heated to reduction temperature and then fed to a kiln at the feed end of which coal is blown in the kiln gases flow co-currently with the charge, and preferably do not contact the pre-heater gases. A sulphurremoving agent such as dolomite may be included in the charge. As illustrated ore pre-heated by hot gases 2 passes through gas-tight lock 3 to kiln 7 into which coal is blown at 8 and air by blowers 11. The kiln discharge is cooled at 30, and surplus coke removed at 33, the metallic product passing to arc furnace 23. The gas discharge is combusted in chamber 14 and then passes through boiler 17, the stream from which drives a generator 21 to provide power for furnace 23.
