Abstract

619,888. Rotary kilns. RYNER, A. (American Aggregate Co., Inc.). Aug. 23, 1946, No. 25312. [Class 51 (ii)] [Also in Group V] A method of manufacturing light-weight aggregate from clay consists in breaking up the clay, passing the clay in its divided form through an initial heating zone for a time sufficient to heat the clay uniformly to a temperature slightly less than that required to cause expansion thereof and then subjecting the heated clay to the heat of a final heating zone at a higher temperature which is sufficient to precipitate expansion of the clay. In apparatus for carrying out the above method a rotary kiln, into which clay is charged in a divided form, is provided with an internal wall having projections 10 which lift the clay and allow it to fall through a flame 14 directed along the axis of the kiln : at this stage the clay is heated to a temperature below that at which expansion and hardening occur. The clay passes to a final heating zone constituted by the lower end of the kiln and is heated by a burner 24, the clay expanding and hardening. An adjustable intermediate burner 20 may be provided so that supplementary heating may be furnished as required.
