Abstract

576,283. Bottle &c. closures. WINGFOOT CORPORATION. Feb. 16, 1944, No. 2886. Convention date, Sept. 29, 1943. [Class 125 (iii)] A bottle, tube or other open-ended hollow article having a lip near the open end is closed by pushing the article lip foremost into a piece of heat-softened heat-sealable and heatstretchable film such as rubber hydrochloride which may contain 2 to 5 parts of butyl stearate which is held taut, and rotating the article as it is brought into contact with the film, thus stretching and twisting the film around and under the lip. The film is thus brought from the configuration shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 2 whereupon the surplus film may be removed. Alternatively the rotation may be continued while the article is moved in the opposite translatory direction, causing a second layer of film to be superposed on the first. The film in this form may be twisted into a pigtail closure 4, Fig. 5, and the surplus film removed. The process may also be used when a cork or rubber stopper &c. has been used to close the opening.
