Abstract

1,030,500. Applying bottle closures. GEORGE S. CLAYTON Ltd., and R.D.M. CLOSURES. Jan. 3, 1963 [Dec. 27, 1961], No. 46324/61. Heading B8T. A head for applying " crown " -type closures to bottles comprises a casing 3, a compound plunger consisting of two parts 1 and 2 respectively urged downwardly by springs 6 and 7, and a stepped closing ring 4 held in position by an open-ended retaining member 5. The plunger 1 has an axial vacuum duct 1B. whereby a crown-type closure A is retained in a pre-application position in the head. In operation, either the head or the bottle may be indexed one relative to the other to apply the closure to the bottle mouth. The spring 7 being of less tension than the spring 8 allows the plunger 2 to be forced upwardly, the closure thus taking a slightly concave shape, thereby allowing it to be more easily forced over the head C of the bottle. By continued relative movement the bottle, with the closure, is forced into the smaller bore of the closing ring 4, thus completing the closure application.
