Abstract
<PICT:0947191/C1/1> A method of making a glass thermometer comprises forming an open bulb 5 on one end 3 of a glass capillary tube 1 and a larger open bulb 6 on the other end 4, closing the bulb 5 and filling it with mercury or other liquid by way of the bulb 6 and capillary tube 1, closing the bulb 6, annealing the assembly, e.g. at 600 DEG C. and thereafter removing the bulb 6 whilst simultaneously sealing the end 4 of the capillary tube 1. Prior to annealing, a constriction may be formed in the end 3 to make it a clinical thermometer and the scale may be marked by a pen dipped in an ink of vitrifiable enamel, such as metallic oxides dispersed in colophony resin, so that during annealing the enamel of the scale is fused into the surface of the glass and vitrified.
