Abstract

This invention describes a catalytically inactive gas-detecting element for gas-measuring apparatus of the kind comprising a coil of platinum or platinum alloy 1 which is enveloped by a glassy-coated 3 body 2 of metal oxide. According to the invention the glassy-coating 3 contains a phosphate and/or a borate as a main component and an alkali oxide, an alkali hydroxide or an alkali earth oxide as an additional component. The main component may include compounds of gallium, tin, antimony or germanium. Such an element may be manufactured by applying a glass- forming substance to a metal oxide body from aqueous solution by dipping the body in a concentrated solution of the glass-forming substance and thereafter heating the body which has become impregnated in this way at a temperature of between 400 DEG C and 700 DEG C, preferably at approximately 500 DEG C. In specific examples, the body is dipped in a concentrated solution of an alkali phosphate or borate. <IMAGE>
