Abstract

782,134. Glass manufacture. CORNING GLASS WORKS. March 4, 1955 [March 4, 1954; March 4, 1954; March 4, 1954], No. 6478/55. Class 56. The vent in a double-glazed cell or window having a pair of plates sealed together at their edges, is closed by inserting a relatively thinwalled sleeve into the vent passage, sealing the external periphery of the sleeve to the outside peripheral region . of the vent passage, and sealing the other end of the sleeve. In Fig. 1, a tapered sleeve 11 has a flange 12, which may be accommodated in a recess in the glass plate 14, bonded to the plate by solder glass 16. A bead 17 of solder glass is placed in the sleeve and is heated by an induction coil 18 until it fuses to the sleeve. When the sleeve is of metal, the induction heating of the metal is conducted to the bead 17, a temporary copper plug 19 preventing the overheating of the other end of the sleeve. The sleeve may be of glass and of uniform section, the glass solder being retained by an inturned flange on the lower end of the sleeve. The solder contains a metal slug which is heated inductively. Alternatively, a separate piece of metal, e.g., manganese dioxide, is placed over the solder bead and is heated by a probe electrode which is inserted in the sleeve, the other electrode being placed in contact with the glass plate 13 opposite the vent. In Fig. 4, the solder glass 46 is interposed between the tapered sleeve and vent walls. In Fig. 7, a reentrant sleeve of metal is secured by glass solder 161 and sealed by metallic solder 181. Alternatively the open end of the sleeve may be pinched or flattened and then welded or soldered. The re-entrant sleeve may be of glass, in which case the open end is tipped off in normal manner. The re-entrant sleeve may have an outer flange arranged either on the surface of the glass pane, or in a recess in the surface. The re-entrant sleeve may be dimensioned to lie entirely between the surface planes of the glass plate. Specification 570,747 is referred to.
