Abstract
1,168,890. Discharge tubes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 13 Dec., 1967 [1 Feb., 1967], No. 56602/67. Heading H1D. [Also in Division C1] In the assembly of an electric discharge device comprising an anode and cathode spaced apart in a sealed envelope with a conductive lead for each electrode extending in opposite directions wherein one of the leads is a hollow tubular member 11 one end being closed and within the envelope and the other end being open and sealed at its edge to the envelope, e.g. as described in Specification 1,168,889, the anode is secured to the closed end of the hollow member and the insulative bulb of the envelope is placed in contact with the edges of the open end of member 11 and heat is applied to the bulb confined to this region of contact to form a multiple surface seal between the member and the bulb. As shown in Fig. 4, a confined flame 24 softens the envelope glass and upward pressure buries the edge of member 11 in the glass and continued heating to 850‹ C. pierces the bulb and bonds the glass and metal. As the parts are slowly cooled and annealed in an annealing flame 25, Fig. 6, the anode assembly is pulled gently down to depress the seal below the surface of the dome. The remainder of the tube is then assembled and the tube enhausted and tipped-off.
