Abstract
627,534. Thermal switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and BIRD, A. E. Feb. 6, 1947, No. 3573. [Class 38(v)] A glow - discharge or other thermal switch has its contact elements formed as a rigid structure and contained in a glass envelope in the side wall of which the lead-in wires are sealed. The contact structure is formed by two metal rods 7, 8 spaced apart by insulating discs 9, 10 closely fitting the envelope 1, the rods passing through holes in the discs. The longitudinal spacing of the discs is maintained by metal clips 11 which engage in notches in the discs and are welded to the rods. A U-shaped bimetallic strip 14 is supported by rod 7 and has a contact which co-operates with the rod 8. In manufacture, the contact structure is placed in the envelope 1, as shown, and the lead-in wires 15 are bent over the open rim. The rim of a glass sealing tube of the same diameter as the envelope is brought into contact with the rim of the envelope and the rims are fused together, so sealing the lead-in wires in position in the side wall. The insulating discs may be coated with aluminium paint to facilitate the starting of the glow-discharge in the dark.
