Abstract
611,035. Making thermionic getter elements. HIVAC, Ltd., RANGABE, A. R., and WRIGHT, C. S. Feb. 6, 1945, No. 3053. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] [Also in Groups XXVIII and XL (a)] Stamping.-A combined arrangement of metal sheathed getter wire and a heating element for use in thermionic valves or other evacuated envelopes is produced by tightly enfolding the wire 68 in a turned-over portion of a thin metal stamping 67 or of a metal strip from which lengths may be stamped, the remaining portion of the width of metal being adapted for eddy current heating. The metal strip may be doubled over or have one edge turned over, and the strip, which is preferably nickel enfolding nickel-sheathed barium wire, is seam welded as close to the sheathing as possible to ensure good thermal contact with the wire. In the operation of stamping getter tabs from composite strip, the ends 70, of the getter portion are tapered and closed, Fig. 2b, to shield the getter from the atmosphere and to reduce the wall strength opposing flashing of the getter. In the stamping illustrated the getter portion is cut-off shorter than the length of the stamping and a hole which may be adapted in shape to suit the electrode supporting structure is provided in the heater portion.
