Abstract

1302340 Electric lamp GTE SYLVANIA Inc 12 Aug 1971 [28 Aug 1970] 37965/71 Heading H1F [Also in Division C1] In manufacturing a lamp a longitudinal slot is formed in one end of a lead-in wire or rod, one end of a refractory-metal ribbon is inserted in the slot, the sides of the slot are closed down on to the ribbon and the ribbon is embedded in a press seal of a lamp envelope, In an embodiment relating to an arc-discharge lamp (Fig. 1, not shown) tungsten rods (7) and a tungsten or tantalum starter rod (8) are joined to molybdenum ribbons (5) by pressing the molybdenum ribbon on to the rods with heating. The temperature is kept low enough to inhibit recrystallization of the rods. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) a halogen tungsten-filament lamp is manufactured. The end of the ribbon may be folded upon itself prior to insertion in the slot.
