Vacuum tubes. - In order to eliminate space charge an electrode is provided which consists wholly or partly of a material possessing, when heated, the property of emitting positive ions which are solely those of a substance or substances non-gaseous at ordinary temperature; preferably a fused mixture of iron oxide with a small proportion of alkali or alkaline earth metal is used. The electrode may consist of a filament of platinum or tungsten coated with the material and mounted between the limbs of a V-shaped cathode. It is connected with terminals on a cap, and may be maintained at a positive potential. In a modification a part of the cathode, for instance a part near the positive leading-in wire, is coated with the ion-emitting material; the cathode thus emits electrons and positive ions.
