Abstract

1429044 Metal vapour lamps GTE SYLVANIA Inc 12 June 1973 [23 June 1972] 28009/73 Heading HID A high-pressure sodium vapour lamp comprises a glass envelope 1, an alumina arc tube 10 containing electrodes 16, and a heater wire 17 wound around the arc tube and seated in a spiral groove on the exterior of the tube which extends substantially over the inter-electrode distance. A thermal switch 22 disconnects the heater after a certain time. The arc tube can be filled with argon at 23 torr or xenon at 13 torr, 20 mg. of mercury and 50 mg. of mercurysodium amalgam of about 1 part sodium to 3 parts mercury. The heater wire can be secured by loops of wire 25 in circumferential grooves. The depth of the grooves should be at least half the diameter of the heater wire and the grooves are made before the alumina is fired. The thermal switch 22 can be replaced by a voltage or current responsive switch including solid state and gas discharge switches.
