Abstract

553,301. Supply systems for space discharge apparatus. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. (Naamlooze Vennootschap Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken). Sept. 9, 1941, No. 11556. [Classes 38 (ii) and 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XL] The filament heating circuit of a gas discharge tube includes besides the normal ballast impedance 9 a double-winding choke 8, 13 with one portion on each side of a filament 2 and wound so that as far as the electrode heating circuit through the condenser 14 is concerned its impedance is a minimum. When, however, the electrodes are sufficiently heated and the tube starts, the winding 13 being shunted by the discharge carries less current than the winding 8 and the choke has an effective impedance. A thinner gauge wire may be used for the winding 8 than for the winding 13 and the winding 8 may consist of a few strands of a stranded inductor the major number of which serve for the winding 13. The condenser 14 and ballast choke 9 may be interchanged. A second double-wired choke 8, 13 may be associated with the other terminals of the tube. 'The invention is applicable to any tube comprising conducting bridges between terminals 4, 5 and 6, 7 whereby the circuit becomes interrupted when the tube is not in its holder ; these bridges may be auxiliary discharge paths. Specification 525,133 is referred to.
