Abstract
528,474. Supply systems for discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. May 8, 1939, No. 13707. Convention date, May 27, 1938. Drawings to Specification. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XL] A high-pressure metal-vapour lamp is combined with at least two impedances, not incandescent filaments, and switching means is provided whereby these impedances can be differently associated with the lamp, so that the impedance in series with the lamp is less during some part of the running up period than when the fully operating condition is attained. In one form a tapped choke is placed in series with the lamp and a bimetallic switch short-circuits one part of the choke ; when the heat of the lamp opens the switch contacts the short-circuit is removed. In another form, the lamp lead contains two chokes in parallel, one of which is switched out by a bimetallic element. The switch may be inside or outside an outer jacket surrounding the lamp and may be operated by hand. The lamp is supplied from mains. Specification 397,182, [Group XL], is referred to.
