Abstract
488,235. Electric control systems. EURICH, J. E. G. June 18, 1937, Nos. 16952 and 21255. [Class 40 (i)] [Also in Groups XXXVI and XXXV] A multiple filament lamp or a circuit containing two lamps or heaters is provided with an electromagnetic switch that is operated by the initial surge of current to open the circuit to one filament, lamp, or heater, but the latter can be brought into operation by momentarily opening the main switch so that the electromagnetic switch closes and remains closed. The switching device may be arranged in a branched adapter or in a lamp cap 28, one contact 33 being connected to a common lead-in 8 to the two filaments 9, 10. The other contact 32 is connected by a conductor 7 to the winding 110 of the electromagnetic switch and thence to the filament 9, and also through the switch contacts 43 to the filament 10. When the main switch is closed the surge of current lifts the armature 46 which, with lost motion, raises the conical element 44 from the contacts 43, so that only the filament 9, which may be of small power, is operative. If the main switch is opened momentarily the element 44 drops, and the surge on reclosing is insufficient to operate the electromagnetic device as the filament is hot and its resistance is consequently higher. The filament 10 is therefore brought into operation. Other circuit arrangements may be employed. For example the winding 110 may be connected in series with both filaments between the leads 7, 8, the contacts 43 being in a lead connecting a tapping from the winding 110 to the junction of the two filaments. In this arrangement when the electromagnetic switch is opened by the surge, only the filament of smaller wattage is effectively operated or if two equal filaments are installed a dull light is emitted. When the electromagnetic switch is closed, the filament of higher wattage or one of two equal filaments is operated at full brightness. A pair of lamps or heaters may be similarly operated. The electromagnetic switch may close the auxiliary circuit when energized or its winding may be divided and the parts located at different positions in the circuit.
