Abstract

658,750. Supply systems for space discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 31, 1947, Nos. 35377 and 35378. Convention dates, Dec. 24, 1946, and July 24, 1947. [Class 38 (iv)] The heating circuit for the thermionic electrodes 2, 3 of a discharge device 1 is separate from the main discharge circuit and arranged to be open - circuited upon initiation of the discharge by a thermal or electromagnetic switch 36 actuated by all or part of the discharge current. The electrodes may be supplied from the secondaries 5, 6 of a heating transformer, the primary 4 of which is connected across the main supply leads through the normally closed contacts 8 of the switch, the actuating coil 7 of which is included in the discharge circuit of the device. To prevent repeated operation of the switch contacts in the event of a faulty discharge device the switch may include a voltage holding coil 37 connected across the main supply leads through contact 38 when the switch is actuated by the discharge current. To facilitate initiation of the discharge an auxiliary electrode 16 may be provided, juxtaposed to the outer wall of the discharge device, with an auxiliary voltage applied between the auxiliary and a main electrode.
