Abstract
605,928. Supply systems for space-discharge apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and HALLIDAY, V. N. Aug. 13, 1946, No. 23918. [Class 38 (iv)] To obtain a starting arrangement for a thermionic discharge lamp, operable over a wide range of supply voltage, two electromagnetic relays are used, one being connected across the supply and the other in series with the lamp. The starting period is substantially equal to the sum of the operate and release times of one relay, plus the operate time of the other relay. In the D.C. arrangement shown, switch S completes a pre-heating circuit L through the serially-connected opposed windings of relay A, contact A1, and inductive ballast D. Relay B is slow to operate and to release and is energized over contact A2; after a predetermined time, it short circuits one winding of relay A. over contact B1 and provides an alternative heating circuit over contact B2. Relay A operates with delay, due to its short-circuited winding, to open its contacts A1 and A2. The latter de-energizes relay B, which later opens its contact B2 to cause the lamp to strike. For A.C. operation the relay windings are shunted by rectifiers and the circuit of relay B includes a series resistor. An interference suppressing condenser C may be connected across the lamp over contact A1.
