[Class 38 (iv)] Hot cathode lamps have a choke coil c in series, and serving as a normal ballast reactor, and a choke coil and condenser d between the cathode heaters so that all are in series between the supply terminals. The second choke coil is preferably in two parts, a, b, one of which is smaller than the other and has an adjustable core by means of which the circuit may be caused to resonate at the frequency of the supply. After striking of the lamp the heater current falls substantially to zero. Specification 577,459 is referred to.
