Abstract

626,412. Control systems for space discharge lamps. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. June 24, 1947, No. 16623. Convention date, June 27, 1946. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVII] An electromagnetic starter connected across a discharge lamp 1 and comprising a coil 11 shunted by normally open contacts 13, 14 which repeatedly close and re-open until the lamp starts, has included in the contact circuit a thermal interrupter comprising a bimetallic member 17 heated by a resistance or glow discharge tube 20 included in the coil circuit, or by the heat generated in the coil 11 (see Group XXXVII) so as to open contacts 18, 19 after a predetermined period, in the event of a lamp failure, and so prevent repeated operation of the starter. The interrupter and starter are inoperative at the reduced voltage existing across the lamp when running. The light emitted by the resistance or, glow discharge tube 20 may be made perceptible to indicate that the interrupter has operated. The moving contact 13 may co-operate with contact 18 and so dispense with contacts 14, 19.
