Abstract

556,112. Electricity supply to discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 16, 1942, No. 3421. Convention date, March 18, 1941. [Class 38 (iv)'] The starting "kick" for a discharge lamp 1 is produced, after the electrodes have been adequately heated, by the opening of the thermal switch 6 ; this energizes the coil 16 in parallel with the switch with the result that the armature 17 is attracted breaking the heating circuit (which includes the heater 13 of the switch 6) at 21, 22, rapidly, to give the starting impulse. When the lamp is started the thermal element, which is in two parts, one part 11 heated by 13 and the other set in the opposite direction to compensate the element as a whole for variations of ambient temperature, re-approaches the fixed contact but is prevented from actual engagement by a shoulder on the attracted armature. The armature is released if the supply fails.
