Abstract

545,935. Thermal switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 7, 1942, No. 247. Convention date, Jan. 9, 1941. [Class 38 (v)] In a glow discharge switch for controling the starting of electric discharge lamps wherein a glow discharge between the bi-metallic strip 10 and another electrode causes a contact 14 on the strip to engage another contact 15 whereupon a substantial heating current passes to the electrodes of the discharge lamp and lasts until the contacts 14, 15 separate due to the cooling down of the strip, the period before the separation of the contacts 14, 15 is increased by inserting a heater 17 for bi-metallic strip in the circuit. This heater delays the cooling down of the bi-metallic strip which occurs when the glow discharge ceases. The switch is mounted in an envelope filled with an ionizable gas and the studs 15, 16 and the heater 17 may be coated with suitable activating material.
