Abstract

669,068. Electric discharge tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL, Ltd. June 10, 1949 [June 15, 1948], No. 15516/49. Class 39 (i). In a fluorescent discharge lamp or a cathoderay tube 1 in which an electrically conductive layer 2 is applied to the inner surface of the tube wall, the said layer having applied to it, at least part of the time, an electric voltage by means of a bi-metallic element 8, the latter, at least in the non-heated condition, engages the conductive layer 2 and is arranged so that electrical contact between the bimetallic element, and the conductive layer is broken when the bimetallic element is sufficiently heated. The layer 2 can be made of silver. The bi-metallic strip 8 is secured to the stay wire of the electrode 6 which is covered with highly electronemissive material, the elements 6, 8 and stem 3 constituting a single unit which is introduced into the end of the tube 1 whilst the element 8 is heated by a gas flame. The inner surface of the tube may be coated with a fluorescent layer. The bi-metallic element may be supported on a separate stay wire in the stem 3 and this stay wire may be brought into electrical contact with the electrode 6 internally or externally of the discharge tube. The electrode 6 may be provided with two supply wires.
