Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the discharge initiation voltage, which is needed to restart a high pressure electric-discharge lamp, without deteriorating the life of the lamp by connecting a starting auxiliary body to a main electrode so that they have the same electric potential, and installing a heating body near the other main electrode. CONSTITUTION:A starting auxiliary body 15, which is prepared by coating a metallic body 16 with an insulating body 17 and is installed outside an emission tube 1, is electrically connected to a main electrode 2 so that the body 15 has the same electric potential as the electrode 2. A heating body 18 is installed at least near a main electrode 3 which is not connected to the body 15, and one end of the body 18 is electrically connected to the main electrode 3 so that the body 18 and the electrode 3 have the same electric potential. Voltage is applied to the body 18 when the electric discharge of the lamp is initiated.
