PURPOSE:To shorten the restarting time of a high pressure electric-discharge lamp by providing a conductor on the outer surface of an outer tube, and reducing starting voltage under a high mercury vapor pressure. CONSTITUTION:A conductor 15 made of molybdenum wire is closely wound around the outer surface of an outer tube 6 to form a spiral shape. An end of the conductor 15 is electrically connected to a base 7 which has the same electric potntial as a main electrode 2. The other end of the conductor 15 is placed 19mm. apart from another main electrode 3 so that a high electric field is applied near the electrode 3. When voltage is applied through a ballast to a metal halide lamp constituted in such a way, pulse voltage supplied from the ballast is applied across the main electrodes 2 and 3 as well as across the main electrode 3 and the conductor 15 having the same electric potential as the main electrode 2, and electric discharge is easily initiated across them. Then, stable lighting is achieved.
