CONSTITUTION:A starting auxiliary body 15 prepared by coating a metallic body 16 with an insulating body 17 is electrically connected to a main electrode 2 so that the body 15 has the same electric potential as the main electrode 2. In addition, the shortest distance between the outer wall of an emission tube 1 and the metallic body 16 of the starting auxiliary body 15 is restricted to below 7mm.. When voltage is applied to such a lamp through a ballast, pulse voltage sent from the hallast is applied across the main electrodes 2 and 3 and across the electrode 3 and the body 15 having the same electric potential as the electrode 2, and electric discharge is initiated easily.
