Abstract
PURPOSE:To make the electric discharge of a high pressure electric-discharge lamp to be easily initiated without deteriorating the life of the lamp by electrically connecting a starting auxiliary body to a main electrode so that they have the same electric potential, and adjusting appropriately the shortest distance between the outer wall of the emission tube and the metallic body of the starting auxiliary body. CONSTITUTION:A starting auxiliary body 15 prepared by coating a metallic body 16 with an insulating body 17 is electrically connected to a main electrode 2 so that the body 15 has the same electric potential as the main electrode 2. In addition, the shortest distance between the outer wall of an emission tube 1 and the metallic body 16 of the starting auxiliary body 15 is restricted to below 7mm.. When voltage is applied to such a lamp through a ballast, pulse voltage sent from the hallast is applied across the main electrodes 2 and 3 and across the electrode 3 and the body 15 having the same electric potential as the electrode 2, and electric discharge is initiated easily.
