Abstract
556,428. Thermal switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 24, 1942, No. 3875. Convention date, March 26, 1941. [Class 38 (v)] In a glow switch, a conducting path 10 between the electrodes 3, 4. is provided, of lower resistance than that including the electrodes 6, 7 through the unionized gas in the envelope, but higher than that including the electrodes when the gas, has been ionized. In the example which shows a bimetallic strip 8 with contact 9 for shorting the electrodes after heating by the glow discharge between them, a layer of metal 10, e.g. of aluminium or nickel is coated on the pinch 2 and is made to form a narrow gap across it, as by passing a high current, to raise the resistance appropriately.
