Abstract

540,874. Electric supply to discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 24, 1940, No. 15629. Convention date, Oct. 24, 1939. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XL] The A.C. supply to a discharge lamp is, at first, through a resistor 9 (e.g. a filament lamp) through the upper thermionic electrode 2 and through the normally closed contacts of an electromagnetic switch 10, the operating coil of which is energized in accordance with the voltage across the resistor by current through a rectifier 12. When the electrodes are sufficiently heated the voltage across the lamp which increases as it becomes heated (it may have the same type of filament as the electrode so as to ensure similar resistance-temperature characteristics, becomes adequate to open the switch ; the resulting "kick" in the conductive supply circuit serves to start the lamp, the switch being maintained open by the discharge current.
